How to Wash Bamboo Pyjamas (And Keep Them Soft Forever)

The best thing about bamboo pyjamas is the softness. The second best thing? They're genuinely easy to look after.

A few simple habits and your Kip & Boo pieces will stay soft, vibrant and beautiful wash after wash. Here's everything you need to know.

If you’re new to bamboo, here’s why so many women are switching to bamboo pyjamas

Can You Machine Wash Bamboo Pyjamas?

Yes, absolutely. No hand washing required.

Just use the gentle or delicate cycle, cold water, and a mild detergent. That's really all there is to it. The gentle cycle uses slower spins and less agitation, which keeps the bamboo fibres intact and the fabric feeling soft.

Hot water is the one thing to avoid. It can rough up the fibres and cause shrinkage, so cold water only.

What Detergent Should You Use?

A mild, gentle detergent is all you need. Skip anything with bleach, brighteners or harsh chemicals — these break down bamboo fibres over time and dull the fabric.

An eco-friendly liquid detergent works beautifully. And skip the fabric softener bamboo is already naturally soft, and softener can actually leave a residue that reduces breathability over time. Let it do its thing on its own.

How to Dry Your Bamboo Pyjamas

Air drying is always best. Hang them in the shade rather than direct sunlight, which can cause fading over time.

In a hurry? A tumble dryer on the lowest heat setting is fine occasionally. Just avoid high heat, which can cause shrinkage and dull that beautiful silky feel.

One handy tip  give them a good shake when you take them out of the wash and hang them straight away. Bamboo has a natural drape that shakes out most wrinkles on its own. No ironing needed.

Do Bamboo Pyjamas Shrink?

They can, if washed in hot water or dried on high heat. Cold water and low heat drying will keep them true to size wash after wash.

If they do shrink slightly, soak in lukewarm water with a small amount of hair conditioner, then gently reshape while damp and lay flat to dry. That usually does the trick.

Bamboo is softer and more delicate than cotton  here’s how it compares

How Often Should You Wash Them?

Every two to three wears is perfectly fine for bamboo sleepwear. Bamboo is naturally antibacterial and odour resistant, which means it stays fresher for longer than cotton.

Washing less frequently also extends the life of the fabric, so it's a win all round.

This is one of the reasons bamboo sleepwear is ideal for hot sleepers and travel.

Stain Removal

Act quickly and treat gently. Dab the stain rather than rubbing it, and apply a small amount of baking soda and cold water before washing as normal. Avoid harsh stain removers which can damage the fibres.

For stubborn stains, a small amount of white vinegar in the rinse cycle works well and won't affect the fabric.

Storing Your Bamboo Pyjamas

Fold and store in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing in damp environments which can cause mildew. Bamboo doesn't need to be stored any differently to your other clothes just keep them dry and they'll be perfectly happy.

The Short Version

Cold water. Gentle cycle. Mild detergent. Air dry in the shade. That's genuinely it.

Treat them well and your bamboo pyjamas will stay soft, beautiful and worth wearing for years. Which is exactly how sleepwear should be.
